Video: Sailing with Disability - Introduction

SSTattler: We will concentrate with the "Martin-16", invented in North America and mostly for disability. Some people with need some neat and different tools e.g. sip 'n' puff system, one-hand, ... From Challenged America 2013 - Martin 16 says "Head injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury,  -- people don't think they are capable of getting into activities right away and we're getting them in there. Sailing is probably the only sport I know of where those of us with disabilities could be in a race with, as an example, some of the top sailors in the world, and win." Many other boats that have the ability to handle disability... look at the Internet / YouTubes and specifically look in the future articles in SSTattler "May/24/2014 | Sailing with Disability - Cruising" and "Jun/07/2014 | Sailing with Disability - Paralympics".

Challenged America 2013 - Martin 16

Published on Mar 19, 2013

My name is Urban Miyares and we're in San Diego, CA with Challenged America.

Challenged America was started informally by two veterans from the Vietnam era, Bob Hettiger, a paraplegic, and Don Hyslop, a quadriplegic. They went out and bought a little 21-footer and taught themselves how to sail. They started inviting other veterans and others with disabilities to go sailing with them.

When I went into the military, and of course came out as a disabled Vietnam veteran, not being able to see, and having hearing problems, having spinal cord injuries, and a whole number of medical issues, I never though I'd sail again.

First day I was out, all of the sudden I remembered what to do, instinctively, and the old thoughts of how to sail when I could see and all kicked in. And before you know it, we were racing.

That's basically how Challenged America started. We just wanted to direct our own rehabilitation and activity.

So it's quite a unique program. A person who just comes back from combat and has a severe disability, whether it's physical or psychological, could go into a two-person sailboat and learn how to sail, and your companion sailor is another combat-disabled vet.

When you become injured or disabled, you often have a programmed way that they put you through in rehabilitation, sports, or recreation. They tell what you can do and what you can't do -- and sometimes we like to push that envelope.

Head injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury -- people don't think they are capable of getting into activities right away and we're getting them in there. Sailing is probably the only sport I know of where those of us with disabilities could be in a race with, as an example, some of the top sailors in the world, and win.

We didn't realize how many people with disabilities, veterans, adults, kids, all wanted to go sailing. Not just go sailing and learn how to sail, but go beyond that. They wanted to go off shore. They wanted to race.

We cannot meet the demand by the disabled who want to go sailing. We have more requests than we can accommodate, mainly due to financial reasons. We could do anywhere from 500 people in one year to more than a thousand people in a year. Challenged America and the whole charity is a volunteer-driven organization. For every dollar someone gives us, 99 cents of that dollar goes right into the program. No salaries and all that to pay. Our main fundraising source is boat donations where we get people who donate boats to us.

Sailing, you can be with your family members. My kids come sailing with us, and I've had my grand-kids come sailing with us. They can all be part of the rehabilitation and this is so critical. Where else could a parent with a three-and-a-half-year-old child with spina bifida take them sailing? Or another young person five years of age who's totally blind? Our most recent vets coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan, wounded warriors, where can they go sailing and not just for a ride? Who's going to take them out? We do that.

Like I tell the veterans, our job is not over because we served. We still have an obligation to this country. That's what a lot of people don't realize. We are not just a sailing organization, teaching people how to sail. We are a therapeutic program with the goal to help them be active again in life, in their community, and contribute back to society.

Challenged America is primarily the disabled directing their own rehabilitation. We're just taking it to another level and that's what Challenged America is all about.

Hopefully, people will come on board and help sponsor the team Challenged America crew and help support the Challenged America Program. Regardless of where they live, there is a way to support Challenged America.
