A New Beginning? Running Free Rights Back Under My Control

Kate Allatt
A Rocky Stroke Recovery
January 4, 2014

It’s only taken 8 months of careful re-negotiation and a further 6 months following a deferred period, after a new contract was signed.

But, I am now back in control of MY life and how would be dramatized. (This is a delayed Xmas present for me!!)

Furthermore, I can try and secure the translation and audio rights to the book now.

This is something I am asked for over and over again for by distressed families going through the shock, loss and trauma of coping with a loved-one going through a stroke, and specifically locked in syndrome.

Understandably, families and friends want to be able to play my first book (swearing and all) and their locked in syndrome loved-one, lying in a hospital bed.  Now, I can look to try and make this happen.

This book is published by Accent Press in 2011 and is considered  inspirational by people who read it.

I, myself, was voted ‘Extraordinary Woman of the Year 2011.‘   Due in part to my graphic account of what I achieved.  I attribute the amazing way my story was structured and unpicked, to my extremely talented ghost writer, Alison Stokes.  I couldn’t even physically write it myself at the time, because I was coping with considerable residual disabilities.

However, the endless hours of voice recordings and emails with her, meant the end result was a totally real and unembellished account with no ‘no-rose-tinted-glasses effect,’ which I’m sure would have been ’smoothed over’ with the passage of time!

Now Running Free is already INTERNATIONALLY published in Germany.

I felt so strongly that I had been prematurely written-off by the medical community, which in turn affected the proactiveness of my family, for me. I believed much of what I did could be TRANSFERABLE to others back in January 2011, so I founded – Fighting Strokes. In 3 years this has proven to be the case. FACT.

People are making more progress than they ever thought or was medically expected because Running Free gives them the self-belief to try for themselves.  Make no mistake we simply try to inspire and educate, all the hard work comes from the individual and their own loved-ones.  We are absolutely NOT promoting ‘false-hope’. We provide a light that is all but often switched-off. With stroke and locked in syndrome, ‘recovery rates’ vary. That’s another FACT. An individuals’ injury, the level of the patients’ motivation and goals, the proactiveness of the loved-ones, the quality of the rehabilitation (if indeed it’s even offered) are all factors to weigh up.

You will have an emotional response to the book.

You will  cry, you will laugh-out-loud (or read two chapters and give up because you don’t like the ‘real’ language that we conveyed in the account).

You may also feel sorry for my husband or me?  But you will feel inspired in your life.

The story is about my mothers’ love, a running obsession, friendship, conflict, being written-off and proving everyone wrong, in what was the biggest FIGHT of my life!

The power of the human spirit is truly unknown!

I am seeking:
  • Audio rights specialists
  • Translation rights companies globally
  • To turn my logline and 200 word synopsis into a script
  • Financial backing to fund the specialist script writing
  • Investment
  • A specialist human interest / non-fiction film producer who knows a dead cert when he sees it!
That’s all :-)

P.S.

My 2nd self-published book – Gonna Fly Now! – (2012) was originally written as it dawned upon me that I had inadvertently given up my Rights for free.  However, it is actually a birds-eye account of the emotional free fall of my dreadful stroke.  It is punctuated by many humorous anecdotes. So even though a ‘bomb had exploded in my brain’ (cheers Mr Woodgate) my humour remained intact!

P.P.S.

My 3rd self-published ebook is not about me, you’ll be pleased to know! It’s designed to be a self-help guide or manual for anyone affected by any kind of stroke.  I’ve researched the ebook for 18 months and found out such a lot.  It will deal with stroke and parenting, emotions, residual disabilities, technology which could help, the work of Fighting Strokes, kids and stroke etc.  Most importantly Cheryl Galsworthy (my editor) helped me give a voice to 40 or so case studies explaining how their stroke had affected them.

It’s due out later this year and I’m still looking for funding for the audio and paperback versions!!! ;-)

Please send enquires relating to all Rights or books to kate@kateallatt.com

THANKS
