Is Fish Oil Just Snake Oil?

DESCRIPTION: Advice to eat oily fish or take fish oil to lower risk of heart disease, stroke, or mortality is no longer supported by the balance of available evidence.

I've previously discussed fish oil supplements in the context of risks versus purported cardiovascular benefits:

Dietary Supplement Snake Oil
Fish Oil in Troubled Waters
DDT in Fish Oil Supplements
Is Cod Liver Oil Good For You?
Are krill oil supplements better than fish oil capsules?

But if the benefits aren't there, then all one is left with are concerns over the industrial pollutants that concentrate in the fish fat (even in distilled fish oil, see Is Distilled Fish Oil Toxin-Free?).

These same contaminants are found in the fish themselves. This raises concern for adults (Fish Fog), children (Nerves of Mercury), and pregnant moms:

Fish Intake Associated With Brain Shrinkage
Mercury vs. Omega-3s for Brain Development
How Long to Detox From Fish Before Pregnancy?

How to Tell if Your Fish Oil is Real Omega 3

Published on Sep 16, 2012

We just heard down under that Fish Oil, tested on 70,000 people, does not prevent heart disease or stroke. Well I take it for brain food. With this in mind I then read on the Internet that there are two ways of producing fish oil EE or TG. This little test shows TG fish oil does not disintegrate a styrofoam cup. I checked with Blackmores.com.au and asked how the fish oil was produced.

Fish Oil and Omega 3's. What Does it Mean

Published on Mar 12, 2013

It was noticed long ago that the incidence of heart disease was lower in Scandanavian countries that had a diet high in fish. This carried over to people in general that had fish as a greater part of their diet. It turns out that the oil in fish (fatty acids) were high in omega 3 fatty acid, DHA and EPA. With this finding, came the development of concentrated, purified fish oil that was high in Omega 3 fatty acid. We also know that fish oil can be used to help your cholesterol. It raises HDL (good) cholesterol, and lowers triglycerides. It thins your blood and has anti platelet activity like aspirin. It is also an antiinflamatory, which in addition to possibly helping your joints, we now know that blood vessel inflamation may be linked to heart disease and stroke. There are 3 important Omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA, which are in fish oil, and ALA, which is plant derived and found in flax seed as an example. Your body uses DHA and EPA, and has a limited ability to convert ALA in your diet into DHA and EPA. ALA is considered an "essential" fatty acid, which by definition means that your body cannot produce it, not actually that it needs it. So stick to fish oil, as it has the Omega 3s your body actually needs. When you buy fish oil, the easiest thing to determine is how much actual fish oil is in a capsule, usually 1000-1200mg. You are not interested in the actual fish oil amount, but how much Omega 3 is in each capsule. Depending on the distillation and purification process, the amount of Omega 3 per capsule will vary significantlty. Think about vodka, there is a $10 bottle and a $50 bottle, both vodka. The more expensive bottle uses better ingredients and goes thru a much more elaborate filtering and distillation process, resulting in a better product. With fish oil you get what you pay for. The cheaper products will be less pure, and have a fishy smell, and even mercury, PCBs and Diazinon. A good quality potent fish oil should have at least 600mg of Omega 3 per capsule (DHA+EPA = total Omega 3s). DHA has also been shown to be important in the development of the brain and nervous system in babies, it is found in breast milk, and is now found in some baby formulas. EPA may play a role in mood and behavior and may help children with ADD and even Autism (my speculation).

Fish oil benefits: Fish oil and omega 3 benefits

Fish oil, is made from the tissue of oily fish-such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, lake trout and sardines. It offer various health benefits. Fish oil contains important Omega-3 fatty acids , most notably eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and decosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These Omega-3 fatty acids are believed to have health benefits that aids in reducing the risk of heart attack and coronary heart disease to combating depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Fish oil, a combination of omega-3 fatty acids, is a century-old staple of pharmacy shelves, and scientists have devoted much research to investigating its effects on cardiovascular health. So far, the evidence has been inconclusive - though some studies have found that fish oil benefits can prevent heart attacks, strokes and sudden cardiac death.

Is Fish Oil Bad For You? 2 Shocking Stories Cause Medical Backlash

Is Fish Oil Bad For You?

Fish oil products have always been associated with good health. One of the essential components of fish oil is omega-3, a fatty acid responsible for keeping your heart healthy, reduces the effects of aging, helps prevent certain types of cancer and boost brain power and capacity. But what if I told you that omega-3 in fish oil could not only improve your life, it could save it as well? Herein is not just one, but two stories of how fish oil can save lives.

Fish oil was used to treat a devastating brain injury in 2006, in the case of Randal McCloy, the sole survivor of a mine disaster in West Virginia. McCloy, aged 26 at the time, was trapped in a mine for 41 hours while the air around him and 12 other miners filled with noxious methane and carbon monoxide. By the time he was pulled from underground, he had had a heart attack, was in liver and kidney failure and had a collapsed lung, according to his doctors. His brain was also riddled with damage from the carbon monoxide and methane. Once McCloy was stabilized, there was very little the doctors could do to stem the tide of inflammation and cell death in his brain.

The doctors on McCloy's team, however, resisted the "wait and see" course common in these types of cases and began an unorthodox treatment regimen, including hyperbaric oxygen treatments and high doses of fish oil. The reason for the presence of fish oil in the treatment was due to the fact that the human brain, which itself is a fatty mass, is about 30% composed of omega-3 fatty acids. In theory, high doses of omega-3 fatty acids, since they mirror what is already in the brain, could facilitate the brain's own natural healing process. Less than three weeks after the mine disaster, McCloy was emerging from his coma. Another three months after that and he was already walking and speaking.

Another unfortunate incident, which involved a 17-year-old man in a car crash, was turned around by this unorthodox fish oil treatment. Bobby Ghassemi, now 20, was in critical condition after an ill-fated car accident. Using the experience they had with treating McCloy, Bobby's doctors managed to not only save his life, but it also helped him recover fast enough to attend his high school graduation three months later. His parents and doctors believed that the high dose of fish oil in his treatment regime was the reason for his survival.

But what do these two dramatic stories really say about omega-3 as a potential treatment for traumatic brain injury? For now, they are merely stories with omega-3 as a common denominator. Due to the possible implications of fish oil in brain health that has stemmed from these two successes, however, many studies are already being made regarding disorders such as stroke, Parkinson's disease and early-onset Alzheimer's.

Though fish oil is still only seen as an experimental treatment, the health benefits of fish oil and fish oil products, such as PLATINUM Series Fish Oil Omega 3, are undisputable. Every time you take a fish oil pill, just remember: the fish oil in that pill could one day save your life.
