Day 110: Chickasaw State Park to Service Park Campground

Thursday Oct 16, 2014, 64 miles (103 km) - Total so far: 3,720 miles (5,987 km)

These are the ladies who were walking the loop in our
campground this morning. Visiting Catherine are (l to r):
Charlotte, Eartha and Diane. They gave us a donation and we
want to say thanks to them for their interest and their support.
It was another great day of riding in Alabama today. Of course I can say that since I wasn't on my bike today. As the designated driver I had a fun time driving the route. But it was beautiful weather again and the traffic wasn't too bad. The riders did have to cover over 63 miles today and they got to do over 3,300 feet of elevation gain and loss, so they might have a slightly different opinion of the day.

It was in the high 40s this morning when we got up. Clear and calm but pretty cold for us Arizona kids. I helped everyone get their stuff ready, and while we were doing that we were visited by some local ladies who come to the park to walk around the loop for exercise.

With everyone out on the road I finished packing things up, drove over to the dump station, and then rolled back into Linden to get groceries and fuel. With errands finished I headed out on Highway 69 which was our road for almost the entire day today.

The route had a lot of hills. Even driving in the van it was pretty obvious the road never had any very long flat stretches. It was either going up or down all the time. After I passed all the riders I found a spot to pull over and hung out there as first Bill and Dana and then Dan and Catherine came in.

Once they had all moved on I rolled on down the road for quite a distance and then found another spot to park. There was a nice shaded area next to a side road that was marked as a school bus stop. Since the bus wouldn't be coming till later I used it.

There were long periods when no cars came by and it was very peaceful. I worked on my notes for the day, had a snack, and then welcomed Bill and Dana. There was a pretty steep hill right before my stop and they were both glad I was there so they could take a break. They each got something to eat, sat for a bit, and then continued on down the road.

Five minutes after they left Dan and Catherine came in. They went through the same process and then went back out. After a bit I followed them down the road. About 10 miles from the town of Coffeeville the ACA takes a smaller road that parallels Highway 69. I stayed on the highway and went straight into town.

Heading west out of town on Highway 84 I veered about 3.5 miles off the ACA route and then turned into Service Park Campground. It is a COE campground and is right along the Tombigbee River. Many of the sites have a view of the river including ours.

We have decided to stay here two nights and take a day off tomorrow to give the riders a rest. Plans include bike maintenance, online work and a trip to Jackson, AL to visit a Walmart. We are now only four days from the end of this stage and our arrival in the Mobile area.
