Integrating Aquaponics with Garden Towers: A Kahuku School Project

Published on Mar 14, 2014

A presentation by Tia Greene-Duarte of Kahuku High & Intermediate School (Hawaii) on local food production, aquaponics, and the Garden Tower (www.gardentowerproject.com). Students are integrating ecological farming technologies to maximize food production, minimize waste, and learn about biological interactions. The Arduino platform is being used for environmental monitoring and data collection in the systems.

The Garden Tower Project is supplying Kahuku High & Intermediate School with another Garden Tower(s) for expanded experimentation and educational opportunity.

The Garden Tower integrates vermicomposting with red wigglers (and other worms) with container gardening allowing for enhanced nutrient cycling and organic food production from compostable kitchen waste.

One Garden Tower is not large enough to support one person (we wish this were possible!); at least not with any vegetables we know about!

Thank you Tia, friends, and educators for sharing about your project!

DIY: Around the Home - Making a Tower Garden Barrel

Published on Oct 5, 2013

In this episode of Around the Home, I show how to construct a garden barrel capable of housing 50 plants in a four square foot area. It includes a worm composting tube as well. I originally found this idea in the below video and it is well worth the watch. I am hoping it is a compact way to grow organic vegetables and compost at the same time.

DIY: Around the Home: Garden Barrel Relocation and Soil Mix

Published on Apr 23, 2014

Changes to the homestead have required the relocation of the Garden Barrel. This is a good time to change out the soil mix to "Mel's Mix" as outlined in the Square Foot Gardening book. 1/3 Compost, 1/3 Vermiculite, 1/3 Peat Moss. A light soil mix that will retain water well.

Building a Vertical Pallet Garden

Uploaded on Jun 17, 2011

Chef Janie, the ORIGINAL Pallet Planter on Youtube!! Be sure and subscribe for more!!!

Have an old pallet laying around the yard? Here's a keen way to get good use out of it's framework. Two hours and you have a beautiful decorative garden that is edible too!

WARNING: How to find and use the proper 'heat-treated' wood pallet; do not use 'chemically' treated wood pallets for indoor furniture, children's rooms, composting or for food growing; herbs, strawberries, etc... Use only 'untreated' or 'heat' treated pallets. First, Methyl Bromide (insecticide on wood shipping crates) was phased out as a fumitory chemical in 1995, but some of these pallets may still be around, so look for the symbol on crates. Most pallets in the USA have been heat-treated for foreign pests, the symbol is ``IPPC`` and are safe. Pallets used in foreign countries may still contain insecticides. Check your own countries codes for pallet uses. Thanks, and as always, be a safe gardener. Enjoy the video -- Chef Janie

How to Plant a Pallet Garden

Uploaded on Jun 22, 2011

SSTattler: Different pallet style but it's works...

http://www.seattleseedling.com

Check out this helpful blog post about what to look for when sourcing a pallet. You want to find one that is heat-treated (HT stamp), not MB!

In this video, I walk you through the steps for creating a vertical pallet herb garden. Originally, I thought I'd fill it with sedum and succulents because you know how I feel about those. But then, after a bit of research and thought, I decided to go with herbal edibles. Succulents are pretty low maintenance and are beautiful for sure, but they would make this project even more expensive than it already is. Rather than using just plain potting soil, you'd need succulent/cactus potting mix, which adds up, especially with this quantity. And buying all the succulents to fill the space is another investment entirely. Besides that, edibles are really my thing and perennial herbs are also low maintenance and beautiful. And I can eat them too! Bonus!

Now since I don't technically know where this pallet has been or how it has been treated or fumigated, I may not actually eat the herbs I've planted in it. But then again, maybe I'll live on the edge and put a few of those chocolate mint leaves into my next mojito after all.

The necessities:
  • 1 clean pallet
  • weed cloth fabric (look for the thick fabric kind rather than the black, stretchy kind)
  • about 2 large bags of potting soil
  • 28 starts (4 inch pots), preferably perennial herbs or ground cover
  • a heavy duty stapler and staples

The plants:
  • Creeping Golden Marjoram (Origanum vulgare)
  • Marjoram Miniature (Origanum unites)
  • Marjoram Golden Upright (Origanum majorana)
  • Chocolate Mint Crinkle Leaf Oregano (Origanum onites aureum)
  • Common Oregano (Origanum vulgare)
  • Beach/Sand Strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis)
  • Lipstick Strawberry (Fragaria 'lipstick')

Bottle Tower Gardens

Published on Jul 28, 2012

SSTattler: No audio but text and good video...

This video shows the efficiency and sustainability of a bottle tower garden. They can be installed against the wall of a house or along a hedge or a fence. The number of bottle towers has to be adapted for providing food security for the family all year long and year after year. It is a method applicable anywhere on earth, both in rural and in urban areas, e;g. on a balcony. It can be applied at the lowest cost to alleviate malnutrition and hunger.
