It was all smiles as local schoolchildren celebrated National Paralympic Day by sailing with London 2012 Paralympic gold medallist, Helena Lucas, at the Poole Yacht Club today (Saturday 7 September).

A total of 10 invited youngsters from Montacute Special School in Poole and St Catherine's Primary School in Wimborne enjoyed an hour's taster session in beautiful sunshine on Poole Harbour with Rockley Watersports, in conjunction with RYA Sailability and the 2013 2.4mR World Championships.

Helena, who made history by becoming the first female Paralympic gold medallist in the 2.4mR class, is one of the British sailing stars competing at 2013 2.4mR World Championships being hosted at Poole YC this week, and as well as enjoying time afloat with the youngsters, she spent time answering their questions while they also got the chance to see and hold the London 2012 gold medal she won exactly one year ago.

Inspirational Teen Natasha Lambert Reveals 2014 Sailing Challenge - Sea and Summit

Published on Mar 1, 2014

http://www.missisle.com

Natasha Lambert, 16, was born with atheroid cerebral palsy, which affects her limbs and confines her to a wheelchair. Today at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show (Saturday 01 March 2014) she officially revealed her incredible 2014 sailing challenge: 'Sea and Summit'.

On the 24th July, Natasha will sail from her hometown of Cowes, Isle of Wight, to embark on a month-long challenge sailing her 21ft Mini Transat, Miss Isle Too, single-handed down the South West coast of England to Wales. Natasha does not have use of her hands and sails her yacht using her mouth to operate a 'sip and puff' mechanism that was engineered by her father and is based on a straw mounted inside a cycling helmet.

Having completed the sailing part, Natasha will then swap her boat for her special walking aid, called a Hart Walker and will climb Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons, the highest peak in Britain south of the Snowdonia mountain range.

Accompanied by her coach Phil Devereux, the Sea and Summit challenge will see Natasha sail 430 miles and climb 2,907ft whilst raising money for the RNLI, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and the RYA Foundation, as well as the profile of sailing for people with disabilities.

This will not be Natasha's fist challenge. Last year, her sense for adventure inspired her to sail across the English Channel from Boulogne to Dover, a voyage which she completed in just four hours. In 2012 she conquered her first challenge sailing around the Isle of Wight.

Her father Gary said: "We're all really excited to officially launch Sea and Summit. It's going to be Natasha's hardest challenge yet but she's determined to do it. Natasha can't walk across the room unaided and to think she is planning to sail over 400 miles and then climb to the top of a mountain is just incredible. For Tash sailing means freedom, control and being able to do the things that maybe she isn't able to do when she's not sailing". Natasha started sailing through RYA Sailability which supports opportunities for people with a disability to experience sailing and to sail more regularly. Yachting New Zealand & Sailability - 'Have a Go' Day in Whangarei

Uploaded on Jul 13, 2010

SSTattler: In North America/Europe the boat is called the "Optimist" made of one sheet of plywood-8'x4' and you buy sails, equipment, and marine paint. Usually used by under pre-teens.

Yachting New Zealand, Sailability Auckland and the Whangarei Cruising Club ran a 'have a go' day for people with disabilities in Northland in early 2010.

Yachting New Zealand's Sailing... Have a Go! programme and YNZ's local NZCT Regional Support Officer Kim Admore with support from Sailability Auckland and the local yacht club gave people with disabilities from the Northland community the opportunity to experience the thrill and freedom of sailing.

This was a fantastic day enjoyed by all. Thanks to Channel North Television for producing this great clip! Thanks also to the Lion Foundation and NZCT for thier ongoing support of Yachting New Zealand.

Tanzer 22 Compilation

Uploaded on Dec 6, 2009

Traveller:
The rose line is used to move the block
horizontally by means of a pulley,
the blue main sheet leads to the boom.
SSTattler: The Tanzer-22 keel-boat is very common in North-America and part of Europe. The second year of my stroke, I quit the Martin-16   fleet and re-launched my Tanzer-22 (named Scallywag). Years ago, I adding a spinnaker  and a mechanical traveller for racing - every Thursday evening from 5:00pm to the end...  The Nepean Sailing Club gave me the mooring location especially for disability and the location very close to the club.  You have a wheelchair or a cane or... you can still sail at most of the sailing clubs.
