Day 152: Knights Key RV Resort (Thanksgiving)
Thursday Nov 27, 2014, 22 miles (35 km) - Total so far: 5,329 miles (8,576 km)
A day off here at Knights Key and it's Thanksgiving. So a Happy Turkey Day to everyone. Hope your day was as much fun as ours.
Our day started off with clear skies and mild temperatures. The wind blew all night but had settled down a little by sunrise. Dana fixed a nice breakfast for us but some of the group didn't want to eat too much in order to eat more at our luncheon later.
After a lot of discussion last night and again this morning, Catherine had decided to ride on into Key West today. She was going to try to connect with a group from a TV station although it was a long shot. She had found a place to stay tonight and Dana helped her pack a minimum of stuff for the ride. Just a few clothing items, personal items and a jacket. And with some snacks and a full water bladder, she left a bit before 10 AM.
The rest of us hung out in camp doing some chores, and then Dan and Sandy got their trikes out and took off towards the restaurant. They had decided to ride back to it which was about 11 miles each way. I debated doing that but thought better of having to ride back on a very full stomach.
So Dana, Bill and I drove back up Highway 1 to the Rainbow Bend Resort and it's restaurant the Hideaway Cafe. It is right on the ocean on the second floor and has wonderful views from its many big picture windows. We had a traditional turkey dinner with two turkeys for the five of us plus side dishes. We also got a very nice salad and bread first, and a choice of one of three kinds of pie for dessert.
Dana was particularly happy because she normally would be cooking the entire dinner and then have to clean up too. Although I missed being with my family back in Arizona, this was a very nice alternative. We had a great time and they give you the leftovers to take home, and there was a lot of turkey leftover.
Back at camp Bill and Dana worked on sorting some of our stuff so it was arranged in boxes based on who owned what. I went over to the Tiki Bar and, although it wasn't open, there were several people sitting at the bar watching the football game. So I pulled up a stool and watched some with them.
After coming back to the beach this evening to photograph the sunset I headed to camp to help with our light dinner. We did a make-your-own wrap/sandwich thing with the leftovers. And then had pecan pie with ice cream for dessert because it is Thanksgiving after all.
