Day 130: Kate's Fish Camp to Anastasia State Park
Wednesday Nov 5, 2014, 102 miles (163 km) - Total so far: 4,579 miles (7,370 km)
What an amazing day. Lots of milestones. Dan and Catherine rode the furthest distance in one day for the entire tour so far. And they broke the century mark in the process, which was part of the plan for this day. We completed the 9th stage by reaching St. Augustine, FL. And this was the end of the Adventure Cycling Southern Tier route.
On top of all that we also reached the Atlantic Ocean after starting at the Pacific Ocean. A pretty amazing accomplishment for anyone, and especially for Dan and Catherine. To ride a bicycle across the whole country is quite an undertaking. It will probably take a while for this to sink in.
It began early this morning with a just-past 7 launch to maximize the time available for the riders. I did the driving today and took my time leaving since the first part of the route was on the continuation of yesterday's bike path. This meant I had to drive the highway and meet up with them down the road a bit.
Bill and Dana were taking a different route that Bill wanted to check out. I followed the ACA route since that was what Dan and Catherine were riding and they were more likely to need me. In Melrose I found a spot on the edge of town and parked. They came in in good time, picked up some supplies, and then continued on.
A ways before Palatka I found a nice grassy area on the side of the road and waited there for the trikes. It was a busy road and had logging trucks on it but had an ok shoulder. At about 11:30 they got in. We talked about how much fun it was going over the narrow bridges on this Highway. I told them that once they got through Palatka they would get back on smaller, less used roads.
As they were leaving I got a call from Bill and Dana. They were just getting into Palatka on their route and were getting something to eat at a diner. I drove into town and parked just before the big bridge over the St. Johns River. When Bill and Dana caught up they loaded their bikes into the trailer having decided they had ridden enough today. Bill became the driver and I became his co-pilot.
We made two more stops along the route to support Dan and Catherine, and then rolled on into St. Augustine. There was pretty heavy traffic as it was getting to be near rush hour, and then we hit a deadlock at the Bridge of Lions.
This bridge is a drawbridge and it had been up to allow a ship to pass which snarled traffic quite a bit. But we got through eventually and made our way down to Anastasia State Park. We had made reservations over a month ago, which was a good thing as it is very popular and was booked up. We got in to our site at about 4:30 and the two riders came in just before 5. They were tired but happy to have finished such a long mileage day.
The schedule has us taking a break here for a couple of days and then taking off again on Saturday morning. I had made plans of my own and at 5:15 my girlfriend showed up. She had flown in from Arizona, rented a car, and we were going to spend the time off at a resort on the beach. I am looking forward to being a beach bum and playing tourist.
The next couple of journal entries will be somewhat short with normal journaling resuming on Saturday.
