Day 122: Sunset King Lake Resort to Florida Springs Resort
Tuesday Oct 28, 2014, 41 miles (66 km) - Total so far: 4,129 miles (6,645 km)
As we were making final preparations for riding out this morning, Bill announced that he had located a "secret" way to get out of the campground. We were going to ride on some back roads to get back to the main highway but he had just that morning figured out a different way to exit the campground.
With everyone ready Bill led Dan, Catherine and myself around the campground loop, up near the office and then to a fence. Apparently Google Earth thought you could go through here but reality had a different idea. So we toured back through the campground and out the normal exit, circled around the neighborhood, and then got onto the roads we needed to leave on.
It was a very pretty area of isolated homes, small bodies of water and heavy growth. And the sun was still low near the horizon which makes for nice views as you ride along. There was even a bit of fog in some of the low lying areas near the road.
We came out on Highway 331 which took us south to Highway 90 which is our route for the whole day. Just a few miles on it and I reached the town limits of Defuniak Springs. This town is the end of map 6 of the ACA's southern tier and the beginning of map 7 - the final map on this route. We had seen last night on the computer that the ACA routes you around the lake at the center of town so we went that way too.
The lake is almost perfectly round and is maybe 200 acres in size. There is a road that runs around it called Circle Drive and that is the route we followed. There are some beautiful homes along the lake and all of the land on the lake side of the road is greenbelt and/or park.
As I was heading out of town I saw a gas station/mini-mart and pulled in. And met up with Jim and Dave again. They are the touring cyclists we have been playing tag with. It was fun talking to them and while I was doing that Dan and Catherine came in. Once all of them had left I got to talk to one of the local characters.
He had ridden in on an old bike with hi-rise handlebars. He said he had plans to put a motor on it and start riding farther each day. I think the term Dan used for this guy was "colorful". It was interesting talking to him, and unlike some of these encounters where I end up having to excuse myself to get away, he abruptly said he had to go - and left.
The riding today was good most of the time. We got quite a bit of cloud cover as the day went on and it kept it from getting too hot. There were some rollers but nothing too high or steep. And 90 has a good shoulder all through here.
I cruised through the towns of Ponce de Leon, Westville and Caryville. Just before the 40 mile mark I reached Bonifay. We had decided last night to keep today somewhat short so our destination was a park just south of Bonifay near the I-10 interchange. And just before the turn to the park were a bunch of fast food places.
There was a McDonalds but I've been to several of them recently so I decided to visit the Waffle House instead. It is right at the turnoff and only about 400 yards from the campground, so I figured I could eat a full meal since I wouldn't have to go far to be done riding for the day.
I had a nice meal and had fun talking to the staff and some of the customers. Two sisters about my age were just leaving and wanted to take my picture with the bike. Then inside I met two local guys a bit older than me who thought it was great we were doing the trip. They had lots of tips on stuff we should do when we got to St. Augustine. They seemed to know a lot about that town and the area we are in.
With my lunch done I rode the last bit to camp and found everyone else there. The big discussion was about the weather tomorrow. Most predictions are saying it is going to rain, possibly heavy, and there will be thunder and lightning. The rain isn't so bad but the electrical storms are not a good thing. So we're still hashing out what we will do. We'll either be riding or not. Stay tuned.
