Venous Sinus Thrombosis - Neurointerventional Stroke Rounds
Published on Aug 28, 2012Cerebral venous sinus thrombus is an often overlooked, unusual cause of stroke, which can affect people of any age. In this video Dr. Coleman Martin of the Saint Luke's Neuroscience Institute, Kansas City, Missouri, introduces a case of venous sinus thrombosis. The condition is discussed and neurointerventional therapy is used to remove blood clots from the veins of the brain.

Warning Strokes - Neurointerventional Stroke Rounds
Uploaded on Oct 9, 2011This video presents a woman in her 30's with transient ischemic attacks (TIA), an important warning sign of stroke. She is discovered to have a severe blockage of a carotid artery which is corrected during an angiogram with a stenting procedure. The steps of carotid stenting and devices used in the procedure are carefully explained. Also demonstrated is the importance of routine followup with a physician to allow the recognition of new neurologic problems before they require emergent intervention. Produced by Coleman Martin, MD.

Neuro Endovascular Lab Virtual Tour - Silver Cross Hospital
Published on Jan 22, 2013Dr. Harish Shownkeen, Medical Director of the Neuro Interventional Surgery Program at Silver Cross, hosts a virtual tour of the Neuro Endovasular Lab at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Illinois.
Silver Cross Hospital's latest addition is a biplane angiography system to diagnose and treat strokes and other neurological diseases. "This equipment allows specialists to extend the treatment window up to eight hours to stop a stroke and even reverse its effect," said Dr. Shownkeen. "Using this new technology, endovascular and surgical procedures can be performed more quickly and with an even greater level of safety for patients by cutting the normal procedure length and radiation exposure in half."
Each year, nearly 800,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke. That means on average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. You or a loved may be experiencing a stroke if one or more of the following symptoms occur suddenly:
• Numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg—especially on one side of the body;
• Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding;
• Trouble seeing in one or both eyes;
• Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; or
• Severe headache with no known cause.
Call 9-1-1 immediately. Time is brain, so it's critically important that treatment be started fast. But knowing who to turn to for help and recovery can be just as critical. Fortunately, you now have access to an outstanding team of neuroscience experts nearby. The Silver Cross Neuroscience Institute features a team of some of the most experienced specialists in the Chicago area, offering the full continuum of care that includes preventing strokes, halting them in their path, and providing the necessary rehabilitation to get stroke victims back on their feet and back to their lives.

MRI Angiography 3D Reconstruction and Flythrough of Cerebral Aneurysm
Published on Mar 5, 2012This video shows a new technique that we are developing to automatically segment and mesh medical magnetic resonance imaging data sets of real patients inside Cinema 4D. In this case a MRI Angiography of a cerebral aneurysm. The data set was first post processed for noise reduction in after effects, and then was converted into a point cloud with over 9 million points inside Cinema 4d. This point cloud was then meshed inside of Cinema 4D using the DPIT EFFEX mesher. The challenging part is to create a useable point cloud, which we did with expression programmed in xpresso. On the left side you can see a fly through of the vessel starting at the aorta and ending in the aneurysm itself. On the right you see an overview of the location of the camera target at any given time. On the bottom right you see the data that the reconstruction was based on. The purpose of the project is to create a system that works more or less automatically with no input from the user. In this case the point cloud segmentation and the meshing were automatic but the flythrough itself was keyframed.
