"A Bleeding Brain: A True Story" by Andrew S. Bloom (#02 - Stroke)
Published on Mar 28, 2013
Enjoying all the beauties of life weren't difficult for this twenty-one- year-old college student; family, friends, sports, owning his own business—unfortunately, all these things were about to change. It was in August of 1988 when things began to go terribly wrong. What started out as a bad headache would soon progress to a misdiagnosis of the flu—and, eventually—would be classified as a stroke that paralyzed his entire right side.
After being rushed to the trauma center, he was told there was a congenital malformation in his brainstem, and...it was currently bleeding. Many people view a stroke, an aneurism, or a brain bleed as a "near death" experience. However, despite the diagnosis, the author graduated from college, got married, had two healthy children, and landed a job in medical sales. Unfortunately, there were other major setbacks and challenges to face on the road to recovery.
FACT: Of the nearly-800,000 strokes occurring annually in the U.S., more than 145,000 are fatal. FACT: For the remaining 80-percent of stroke victims who survive, their lives are profoundly affected. Many face therapy and rehabilitation. All, however, live with the higher probability of another bleed. And because of this, their lives have indeed changed forever.
Turmoil has continued for Andrew Bloom since that first diagnosis in 1988: two more 'brain bleeds' and major surgery. At times, anger, frustration, and depression would set in; somehow though, he found the will to live another day.

The Hidden World of FND (#17 - Ataxia)
Published on Feb 25, 2015“This film has been entered into the 2015 Neuro Film Festival at NeuroFilmFestival.com.”
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a problem with the functioning of the nervous system. FND can be as debilitating as Parkinson’s and MS yet patients are often left to suffer alone in silence. Some doctors mistakenly assume that symptoms they do not understand are “all in a patient's mind,” history has proven this theory is wrong.
Men, women, and children all over the world are affected by functional symptoms. A Functional Neurological Disorder diagnosis should be made from positive signs, not negative test results. It can be a secondary or stand-alone condition which with specific treatment, if it were available, can improve in some people.

Chloe's Story (5 Minute Version) (#54 - Traumatic Brain Injury)
Published on Feb 13, 2015Can two minutes change a life? Hear Chloe’s story in her own words, and you decide. Chloe is a young high school athlete playing on a traveling soccer team who sustains a head injury during a game; and then sustains further brain trauma when her coach sends her back into the game. This is a poignant story of Chloe’s experience following her multiple concussions and the importance of knowing when to say “No.” Her message is also about seeking medical assistance immediately following a head injury, as a precautionary measure. The long-term side effects that Chloe has endured include depression; headaches; and trouble remembering, learning, and performing everyday tasks. “Chloe’s Story” is a powerful reminder for parents, athletes, coaches, teachers, and administrators about the importance of concussion awareness and training. Students who are injured must learn to advocate for themselves; teammates and adults on the sidelines must advocate for the injured. In telling her story, Chloe is passionate about spreading the word so other students and their families will not have to endure the same experience as her family. “Chloe’s Story” stands out as an important addition to the vast collection of testimonials in the medical and health arena on concussions, brain injury, athletic training, and more.
