Timed Sit to Stand Test

Uploaded on Nov 14, 2011

Physical therapists from The Centers at St. Camillus in Syracuse, NY have created videos to help individuals test their balance, to prevent falls and fall-related injuries. The risk of falls is as serious a health problem for older adults as strokes and heart attacks. One out of every 3 adults 65 years and older suffers a fall each year. While there are several different risk factors for poor balance, one of the most significant is loss of muscle strength. Research has shown that poor strength leads to poor balance, which naturally increases fall risk. For more information, please visit www.st-camillus.org. The videos were created to educate and encourage family dialogue. Physical therapists demonstrate a simple test that may be done at home to determine if an individual is experiencing balance related problems.

The videos are part of The Centers at St. Camillus' ongoing effort to prevent falls and fall-related injuries in our community, which also includes free falls prevention seminars that are presented throughout the Central New York community, and exercise classes for older adults.

Preventing Falls - New York State of Health

Published on Nov 14, 2014

SSTattler: Lots of Tai Chi.... yay yay yay!

Older adult falls are common, deadly, and costly. The New York State Older Adult Fall Prevention Program offers proven programs that save money and keep older New Yorkers safe, secure, and independent, by educating physicians to assess fall risk in older patients and refer them to proven programs to help them reduce their risk. In 2012, led by Champion Dr. Frank Floyd, United Health Services (UHS) in Broome County became the first healthcare system in the country to adopt STEADI. Today 170+ physicians across 17 practices within UHS assess older adult patients for fall risk and refer them to proven community programs, such as Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance and Stepping On, to help them reduce their risk of falling and to lead a longer, healthier life.
