Day 88: Matson, MO to Cahokia, IL

Wednesday Sep/24, 2014, 26 miles (42 km) - Total so far: 2,838 miles (4,567 km)

This was a day for goodbyes. We said goodbye to the Katy Trail. We said goodbye to our guest riders - Chuck, Wayne and Randy. And we said goodbye to Missouri.

Here is the formal final group shot. From left to right: Dan, Catherine,
Randy, Chuck, Wayne, Dana and me.  The yellow shirt gang.
Dan was not able to ride due to his trike being broken, but he and Bill made great progress in getting a repair set up. Hopefully his trike will be ready to roll when we start riding again on Sunday.

The rest of us got ourselves out of the cabin and tent at sunrise this morning. It had been a quiet night although kind of odd sleeping in a different bed from the past 90 some nights. We did a last group shot at camp and then headed out of the park and back to the trail.

It was a short day and had been planned that way so our guests could retrieve their vehicle and have time to drive back home. So, although we were sort of in a hurry, we also had to take the time to stop in the town of Defiance. It is right on the trail and I counted five bar/cafe places within a block or two.

It also has a bike shop which is in the old depot building and is right on the trail. You can enter their backyard via a small bridge from the trail. They have water available for cyclists and nice restrooms available too. They sell bikes and rent some, and they have an interesting assortment of jerseys and some other basic equipment a cyclist might need.

Wayne and Randy decided it wasn't too early for ice cream and got some from the bike shop's Blue Bunny freezer. Although tempted I passed since I was saving myself for our after ride celebration - wherever that was going to be.

For the third day in a row I was passed by a gentleman and his friend who have been riding this part of the trail with us. His name is Gary and he carries a sock monkey with him which he poses with other riders and landmarks.

Just a bit after noon I came into the outskirts of St. Charles. Our ride ended just before the actual station. We got photos there and at the famous Lewis & Clark statue at the park. There was some big festival coming up this weekend and there were a lot of very large tents being set up for it.

The group voted to go to the Trailhead Brewery for lunch. It is right next to the trail just before you get to the park and statue. We sat in the enclosed patio and had a great meal. And the beer was great too.

After lunch Bill drove Randy into St. Louis to retrieve their vehicle. When they returned we helped them get packed up and then said goodbye. We then packed up all our bikes and gear and drove across the Mississippi River into Illinois. We finished the drive in the town of Cahokia at the Cahokia RV Parque.

We will spend a total of four nights here taking some time off. We hope to do some sightseeing and will be attending a dinner on Friday night and some sort of news conference on Saturday. And of course there will be the usual laundry, shopping and computer work too.
