The Incessant Talker

The Teaching of  Talking

There is another kind of speaking difficulty that can cause the speaker to be maladjusted, or maybe it is the other way around. It deals with the incessant talker. The person who monopolizes the conversation and does not let you get a word in edgewise. It not only occurs with people who have aphasia, but also with those who have head injury.

There are also many normal people who actually never stop talking. That would also be a speaking difficulty since it could cause lots of bad feelings and avoidance by others.

Speech pathologists deal with this problem by teaching incessant talkers to ask questions of other people and to take turns... Listened to the radio yesterday and a woman reported how she did not want to date a great guy who had good looks, lots of money etc., since he always talked non-stop with others.  On their first date at dinner he talked with people who were sitting at adjacent tables and very little with his date.  She realized this was the not the kind of person she wanted to have a relationship with, Since relationships are critical for the enjoyment of life and happiness for most, one can see how important interaction and communication actually are.  The way we speak with others has a direct reflection upon our relationships. The speech language pathologist is often the person who can evaluate speaking and communication as well as helping find ways to improve upon them.

Be on the look out for the incessant talker!
