Stroke Warning Signs/Symptoms—Body Language
Published on Nov 27, 2012This public service announcement aims to communicate the importance of recognizing the often subtle signs of a stroke. The PSAs show that body language can communicate a wide range of emotions, but one of the most important things it can tell you is if someone might be having a stroke. The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association are encouraging Americans to use the F.A.S.T. (F-Face drooping; A-Arm weakness; S-Speech difficulty; T-Time to call 9-1-1) acronym to communicate the warning signs/symptoms of a stroke to bystanders, and empower them to take action upon recognition. The new PSAs urge viewers to learn the symptoms of a stroke at StrokeAssociation.org.

When it comes to stroke, two factors can make a difference in increasing your chance for recovery. The first factor is to act FAST and call 911, because the sooner stroke treatment starts, the better the outcome.
The second factor affecting outcome is where you are treated. Since 2009, Alegent Creighton Health has had hospitals that are Joint Commission-designated Primary Stroke Centers. This certification recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to achieve better outcomes for stroke care. It was developed in collaboration with the American Stroke Association.

When Stroke Strikes Young
Published on Jan 30, 2013Healthy and active Barbie Diaz suffered a stroke at age 18 while driving on Gainesville's Archer Road, causing her to hit a car. Diaz was immediately in the care of the UF Stroke Program team and physicians within UF's neurosciences who diagnosed Diaz with a rare disease called Takayasu's arteritis. She is healthy at age 20.

A Stroke a sudden impairment of the brains blood circulation in one or more blood vessels. A stroke impairs or decreases oxygen supply and can cause serious permanent damage or necrosis to the brain cells and tissue.
There are 2 different types of strokes: Ischemic and Hemorrhagic.
- Ischemic - is caused from a reduction in blood flow.
- Hemorrhagic - is caused from - blood vessels in your brain leaking or rupturing.
A thrombosis or thrombotic stroke -these are medical terms for a blood clots - the way this happens is that it occludes blood flow to the brain (the word occlude is a medical term for block) so when we say the vessel was occluded by a blood clot, this means that a blood clot was blocking the normal flow of blood. A clot may be caused by fatty deposits (plaque) that build up in arteries and cause reduced blood flow.
Another cause of a stroke could be from an Embolism: an embolism is an object that is created in one part of the body - but then travels and causes a blockage in another part of the body. For example, a blood clot can be formed in the atrium of the heart from atrial fibrillation - but then part of it becomes dislodged, circulates throughout the body, and then blocks blood flowing through a vessel in another part of the body - when this happens in the brain it is called a stroke.
The last type of stroke is called a Hemorrhagic stroke (hemorrhagic is a medical term for bleeding - but we usually use this word when there is a lot of bleeding or when the bleeding is in a critical area, such as the brain).
